Hello,
I saw that many have had the same problem to use the ReadMe package regarding an error with the undergrad.xx function.
Has anyone found how to solve it? I ran the ReadMe in a mac with no problems but it just does not run in my PC. Here is the message:
C:\Python25\python.exe: can't open file 'C:/Program': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
Error in undergrad(sep = ",") : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad.
In addition: Warning message:
running command 'python C:/Program Files/R/R-2.15.2/library/ReadMe/makerfile --separator "," --control-file control.txt --table-file tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01' had status 2
>
Any help would be really appreciated,
Best,
Leonardo

Hello,
Like the three posters April, I too am receiving the error message that the python module failed error:
> undergrad.results <- undergrad(sep = ',')
[1] "python C:/Users/Triumphant/Documents/R/win-library/2.15/ReadMe/makerfile --separator \",\" --control-file control.txt --table-file tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01"
Error in undergrad(sep = ",") : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad.
Was this an easily resolved error?
Thank you,
Sam
Hello,
I'm having some trouble generating bootstrap standard errors for my
dataset. It works fine for the demo, but as soon as I use my data it
sticks and doesn't want to generate them. I think the offending piece
of code is in the VA function, probably this part:
while (!boot.good && boot.se) {
index.boot1 <- sample(1:p1, p1, replace = TRUE)
index.boot2 <- sample(1:p2, p2, replace = TRUE)
commD0 <- commD[index.boot1, ]
hospD0 <- hospD[index.boot2, ]
print(commD0)
boot.good <- !(any(colMeans(commD0[, -1]) ==
1) || any(colMeans(commD0[, -1]) == 0) ||
any(colMeans(hospD0[,
-1]) == 1) || any(colMeans(hospD0[, -1]) ==
0))
}
For whatever reason, I don't think it's ever setting boot.good to TRUE
and is stuck in an infinite loop. I'm not sure what conditions would
lead that to happen, especially since preprocessing takes out all the
invariant columns anyhow.
Any advice here would be very appreciated.
TIA,
- A

Hi,
I too am having problems implementing ReadMe. I am not an expert on
such matters so I do not deny the possibility of user error.
I installed the most recent version of ReadMe. I am also running
Python 3. When I try to execute the demo, I get this:
> library(ReadMe)
Loading required package: VA
> demo(clinton)
demo(clinton)
---- ~~~~~~~
Type <Return> to start :
> oldwd <- getwd()
> setwd(system.file("demofiles/clintonposts", package="ReadMe"))
> undergrad.results <- undergrad(sep = ',')

--separator \",\" --control-file control.txt --table-file
tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01"
Error in undergrad(sep = ",") : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad.
When I try to execute my own analysis, I get this:
> setwd("C:/Users/Jesse/Presidents and Party Rhetoric/Data/1933 Roosevelt")
> undergrad.results <- undergrad(control="1933RooseveltControl.txt",
> stem=F, strip.tags=F, ignore.case=T, threshold=0.01, python3=T,

Hello,
I tried running ReadMe over the weekend and when I executed the "demo(clinton)" command, I got an error message after the "undergrad.results <- undergrad(sep = ',')" command line (error message below). My best guess is that it has something to do with python-Windows 7, though from what I can tell Python is installed correctly.
"[1] "python C:/Program Files/R/R-2.14.2/library/ReadMe/makerfile --separator \",\" --control-file control.txt --table-file tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01"
Error in undergrad(sep = ",") : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad."
Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you,
Justin
Dear all
I am new to this and I wonder if anyone could point me to the right direction.
I have installed python 2.7 and the Readme package. When I run
demo(clinton), I received the following error messages:
[1] "python C:/Program Files/R/R-2.15.0/library/ReadMe/makerfile
--separator \",\" --control-file control.txt --table-file
tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01"
C:\Python27\python.exe: can't open file 'C:/Program': [Errno 2] No
such file or directory
Error in undergrad(sep = ",") : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad.
In addition: Warning message:
running command 'python C:/Program
Files/R/R-2.15.0/library/ReadMe/makerfile --separator ","
--control-file control.txt --table-file tablefile.txt --threshold
0.01' had status 2
Thanks a lot for your help in advance!
Jim

Think green. Please do not print this email unless it is absolutely
necessary! thanks.
Greetings,
I followed these steps to install ReadMe on Ubuntu 11.10:
1. sudo apt-get install r-base
2. download the following tar files from
http://r.iq.harvard.edu/src/contrib/
- http://r.iq.harvard.edu/src/contrib/VA_0.9-2.10.tar.gz
- http://r.iq.harvard.edu/src/contrib/ReadMe_0.99834.tar.gz
3. sudo R CMD INSTALL VA_0.9-2.10.tar.gz
4. sudo R CMD INSTALL ReadMe_0.99834.tar.gz
R is installed. When I am inside the R command prompt (>) at the terminal, I
run:
library()
and get the following snippet:
Packages in library '/usr/local/lib/R/site-library':
ReadMe ReadMe: Software for Automated Content Analysis
VA Verbal Autopsies
Which indicates that both VA and ReadMe are installed.
However, when I try to run readme commands, here is what happens:
> readme()
Error: could not find function "readme"
> undergrad()
Error: could not find function "undergrad"
> demo(clinton)
Error in demo(clinton) : No demo found for topic 'clinton'
I am new to ReadMe and R, but familiar with Unix. Does anyone know how I can
get access to the readme() function?
Many thanks,
Eric Gustavson
Hi,
I'm quite new at using R, so this may be a very simple problem. After installing the Automated Content Analysis package from a local zip file in R 2.12.2, and typing the command "library (ReadMe)" I get the following error:
Error: package 'VA' required by 'ReadMe' could not be found
The ReadMe pdf says that VA should be automatically installed with ReadMe, but it seems that it is not happening. I have also tried to install VA from this site, but have gotten this error:
In gzfile(file, "r") :
cannot open compressed file 'VA (2)/DESCRIPTION', probable reason 'No such file or directory'
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello. This is Kihong Eom.
I am trying to replicate “Automated Content Analysis” program, as was
instructed in “readme.pdf.” After I put the command “undergrad.results <-
undergrad(sep = ",")” in R, it continues to give me a message of “[1]
"python C:/PROGRA~1/R/R-212~1.2/library/ReadMe/makerfile --control-file
control.txt --table-file tablefile.txt --threshold 0.01" Error in
undergrad() : Python module failed. Aborting undergrad.” Would anyone tell
me how to solve the problem? I have already installed Python 3.2 in my
Window laptop.
Actually, I’d like to have a meeting with whom is interested in modifying
the “Automated Content Analysis” program to be used in another language
setting. I attempt to modify it for a Korean setting. I am here at Harvard
until the end of July. You may reach me by email, kihongeom(a)fas.harvard.edu
. Thanks,

Apologies for what is certainly a problem arising from my being relatively
new to R.
I'm getting an error I can't seem to pin down:
/Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/library/ReadMe/makerfile:5:
DeprecationWarning: The sre module is deprecated, please import re.
Running:
R version 2.10.1
Python 2.6.2
During installation of ReadMe I got confirmation that VA was installed.
>From what I can find online, this appears to be a Python issue, with the
"sre" module being, at least at one point, a stub that just asked for an
import of "re".
Is there any documentation I can look through to find how/where to import
the re module -- is it likely that this is, in fact, the problem?
>From what I can tell, the control file is formatted correctly, the working
directory set correctly, etc.
Thanks for any and all help on this.
