Dear Nathan,
I think this is an issue related to your printer drivers. Our
document uses Adobe PS type 3 fonts, so you need to make sure
that you have a driver and firmware that can handle these fonts.
Can you be more specific about the parts that don't have proper
spacing? Is it the verbatim envornment, for example?

I have downloaded the pdf file.
It displays perfectly OK on the terminal, but prints without
proper
character spacing - in places not readable.
I download and print many pdf files related to R. I have not
