you can use the same combining rules for any quantity. if R^2 is of
interest to you, then you can do that. For most purposes, I wouldn't use
R^2 however (see
http://gking.harvard.edu/files/abs/mist-abs.shtml), but
you can do the same with sigma^2 or other quantities.
